Systemic Family Therapy: Coordinating Care Across Distances
Systemic family therapy addresses challenges that span generations, locations, and relationships. By considering the family as a connected system, we help navigate complex situations involving care, safety, and communication — even when loved ones live far apart.
Case Study
A 43-year-old woman in California sought help for her aging mother with dementia, who lived in New Jersey. Concerns emerged that her mother’s second husband, also in assisted living, was verbally abusive and controlling her communication with the family. Recorded calls confirmed threats by her husband towards her.
Our Approach:
- Advocated with the assisted living facility, which had been unaware of the abuse.
- Coordinated care and communication between family members in multiple states.
- Assisted the family in obtaining legal guardianship over the mother’s affairs.
- Facilitated relocation to a safe, supportive memory care environment.
Outcome:
The mother was moved to safety, and the family expressed gratitude for the intervention, noting that prior attempts to involve therapy and protective services had failed due to geographic barriers.
