Trainees receive didactic and live supervision in the clinic, working with wide trajectories of families, including Spanish language clients , that are navigating multiple systems—educational, workplace, criminal justice, etc. This specialized work with men, women, children of all ages, and members of the LGBTQ* community incorporates family systems, social justice and decoloniality methodologies taught by national and internationally renowned scholars and activists.
Teaching strategies include a critique of all mental health and marriage/family therapy mainstream models. Scholarship from healing practices outside of western knowledge are integrated with community activism to promote sustainable models of individual, family and community well being.
Trainees participate in self of therapist exploration and anchoring wihtin an intersectional lens. Their therapeutic training includes the facilitation of culture circles that includes the untangling and healing of multiple challenges clients present, develop and participate in strategies of social activism. As part of their mentoring, students also have opportunities for conference development and student presentations promoting professional visibility.
Trainees are also invited to develop curriculum for a liberation based perspectives that can translate over to various settings—classrooms, therapy room, professional organizations interested in moving beyond “diversity” to creating healing spaces through decoloniality.
